Master of Social Work (MSW) 2 year full time course has been designed by Dibrugarh University to promote career growth in Social Work. The course provides an understanding of the history and philosophy of Social Work and its emergence as a profession.The course curriculum offers the understanding about the need and importance of Social Work Education,Training and Practice.

The 2 year full timeMaster of Social Work (MSW) at NERIM School of Social Science is conducted as per the prescribed regulations and syllabi of Dibrugarh University.
As per regulation of the Dibrugarh University, the MSW programme (2 year full time) consists of four semesters of six months duration each.The first semester shall focus on the foundation course.The second semester shall focus in the functional area. A student is required to opt for specializations in the third and fourth semester along with an Elective subject in the third semester.As per the course curriculum, the student is required to undertake a concurrent fieldworks at the end of each semester based on which the student has to submit a summary report. Later viva is conducted on the submitted report. All the papers except Research Project (SWR404) in 4th Semester, has 100 marks (40 for Internal Assessment 60 for External Assessment). Research Project has 200 marks (100 marks for Internal Assessment and 100 marks External Assessment).
The Department of Social Work at NERIM School of Social Science offers three specializations. Trainees have the choice to select one specialization in the 3rd Semester.
This specialization equips students to work with communities and organizations and develop skills in identifying needs of rural and urban communities.
This specialization is concerned with human resources and the dynamic situations in industry. It is an essential qualification for the post of labour welfare officers under the factories act, 1948.The specializations equip the graduates to work as personnel officers and HR Executives in the public/private/ service sectors. Trainees are placed in industrial organizations for fieldwork during the 2 year.
This is an essential qualification for employment as medical and / or psychiatric socialworker in general hospitals and medical settings .Trainees are placed for field work in general hospitals, mental hospitals, child guidance clinics, deaddiction centers and social welfare department of industries. Only those persons with an aptitude to work with the sick and willing to acquire knowledge of various physical and mental health problems may opt for this specialization.
Field work is a distinct features and an integral part of the total MSW degree programme. Field work enables the students to integrate and reinforce the theoretical knowledge and information acquired through class room instruction and development skills through actual practice under competent supervision from the agency and by the faculty supervisors.1 and 2 semester fieldwork placements are generic in nature.During the second year students are placed in specialization wise organizations for 3 and 4 semester. Students are required to put in 15 hours per week in the organization inwhich he/she is placed forwork. The field work component of the MSW course is organized into concurrent field work and block field work .The institute has a well organized field work programme with a well developed curriculum. Apart from the concurrent field work, the institute organizes orientation visits in the 1 semester and rural camp in the 2 semester.
Every student is expected to conduct research on a selected topic, and submit the research report as partial fulfillment of the requirements of the MSW degree .The faculty members guide the students in the process of conducting the research. Research project is based on the application of the theory of research methodology. Three copies of the research project is to be submitted in hard binding format the end of the fourth semester according to stipulated schedule.
After the End Semester Examination of MSW Course, the student is placed in an organization for a period of 30 continuous days for block fieldwork.During this period the student is expected towork as an intern, study all the relevant aspects of the organization and learn to function as a full-fledged professional social worker.As per the university rules certification of satisfactory completion of block placement by the organization is necessary for declaration of the MSW result obtaining the MSW degree.
Any Graduate with 45% from Dibrugarh University or any other University recognized as such by the University (40 percent for SC/ST/OBC) in aggregate, is eligible to apply for admission into the 2 year MSW Programme.
Selection of candidates shall bemade on the basis of NERIM Entrance Test (NET) for SocialWorks.The entrance test shall be both subjective and objective type question comprising of topics related to Social issues and general awareness.
N.B.: Eligibility criteria and other procedure such as for Admission and Examination is subject to change from time to time as per the notification of the University.
A student of MSW(2 year Full Time programme) shall have to attend minimum 85 % of total classes in each paper to be eligible to appear in each semester end examination.
AS PER DIBRUGARH UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS
- To be eligible to appear in the MSW End Semester Examinations as a regular candidate, a student must attend 85% of the lectures delivered during the academic session. A student who attends at least 75% of the lectures delivered shall, however, be allowed to appear in the Examination as a non-collegiate candidate on payment of a prescribed fee.
- The semester examination shall be divided into two groups: ODD and EVEN (i.e. Odd semester: First and Third. Even Semester: Second and Fourth.)
- A candidate who fails or doesnot appear in one or more subjects of any end-semester examination will be provisionally promoted to the next higher semester with the failed subjects as carry over subjects. Such candidate will be eligible to appear in the carry over subjects in the next examinations of those subjects. However, the following restrictions will be applicable.
- A candidate shall be allowed maximum 5 years to complete the course of MSW.
- A candidate shall be entitled to a maximum of two chances (excluding the first regular examination) to clear a subject. If a candidate fails to clear a subject even after the two chances, he/she has to repeat the semester with admission.
- lf a student clears the fourth semester examination before clearing all the subjects of the previous semesters, the result of the fourth semester examination of that candidate shall be withheld and his/her results shall be announced only after he/she clears the subjects of the previous semesters.
- In order to pass in a subject, a candidate shall have to pass in all the parts separately.
Candidate who has passed all the semester examinations shall be declared to have passed the Master of Social Work (MSW). Candidates securing 60% or more marks in aggregate shall be placed in the first class; candidates securing less than 60% marks in aggregate shall be placed in the second class.
